Bridget Strand's leadership is defined by her vision of reconnecting the United States through the Chiral Network, a system facilitating instant communication and data transfer across vast distances. She oversees Bridges, a company that performs various governmental functions on behalf of the UCA. Her administration relies heavily on porters who brave Beached Things (BTs) and bandits to deliver supplies to remote Knot Cities. A critical aspect of her governance involves the management of Bridge Babies (BBs), premature children existing between life and death, which allow porters with DOOMS to sense invisible threats. She views these BBs as essential equipment for survival, though she eventually faces resistance from Sam Porter Bridges, who forms an emotional bond with a specific BB named "Lou" after refusing UCA instructions to treat it merely as a tool.

In Their Own Story

Sam Porter Bridges arrives at Central Knot City only to witness its destruction following a voidout caused by BTs. Reviving in Capital Knot City, he meets Deadman and is tasked with delivering morphine to the dying President. Bridget Strand, played by Lindsay Wagner with the likeness of Emily O'Brien, pleads with Sam to rejoin Bridges and realize her dream of "reforming America" before she succumbs to her illness. Upon her death, Sam takes her body for incineration but refuses to incinerate a Bridge Baby involved in the Central Knot City voidout. Following this event, Sam receives a holographic message from his estranged sister, Amelie Strand (also played by Wagner/O'Brien), who reveals she led an expedition across the continental United States over three years. She informs him that upon reaching Edge Knot City on the West Coast, she was captured by Homo Demens to guarantee the city's independence. Amelie tasks Sam with completing the Chiral Network so she can take Bridget's place as President of the UCA.
